Methodology for calculating the cost of school supplies
In this work, we have adopted a methodology based on four interrelated stages:
Collecting basic price data
School supplies prices were determined based on direct data from bookstores at the beginning of the 2025/2026 school year, taking into account geographical differences in prices. Prices for items of acceptable quality were adopted as they are the most commonly purchased by families.
Comparison with previous sources
These prices were compared with those in the reference study “Society’s Expenditure on Education,” which includes school supplies prices for previous years, in order to construct a time series that allows for tracking cost developments over time.
Identification of approved school supplies
The official list of books and notebooks required for each level of education in the preparatory and secondary stages, as issued by the Ministry of Education for the year 2025/2026, was used as a reference. The same list was applied to previous years in order to ensure uniform calculation standards and enable accurate scientific comparison.
Calculation based on a minimum basic list
The list was limited to the minimum basic materials necessary for the success of the educational process, making the estimates as close as possible to the minimum cost borne by families.
